Celebrating Lunar New Year: Staying Connected Wherever You Are

Lunar New Year is a time of renewal, reflection, and connection—a moment to honor traditions, celebrate family, and look forward to the year ahead with hope and gratitude. Celebrated by many cultures across the globe including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean communities, each culture brings its own unique customs and practices, making this holiday profoundly meaningful.

For many celebrating Lunar New Year, connection—whether in person, virtually, or through meaningful practices and memories—is what matters most. By finding creative ways to celebrate, we honor the resilience and richness of this celebration and ourselves for making it through another year.

For some, Lunar New Year may bring mixed emotions, especially if distance or personal circumstances make it hard to celebrate in familiar ways. Acknowledging and finding support through these complex feelings is an important part of maintaining your emotional well-being.

Vibrant wishes you a joyful and prosperous new year filled with community, good health, good luck, and good food.

Even if you can’t be with loved ones this year, every person can find joy in the full moon and another year accomplished. While traditions may differ across families and cultures, we hope these ideas can bring the celebration to you!

Ways to Celebrate Lunar New Year From Afar

Connect Virtually

Schedule a video call with family or friends to share greetings, enjoy a meal together, or connect over storytelling or karaoke.

Recreate Traditions

Transform your space with red and gold decorations, prepare New Year’s dishes, or light lanterns and fireworks to create a festive atmosphere that feels like home. Engaging in these practices can help foster a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation. Note: Be mindful about checking in with neighbors before setting off fireworks, as some may be activated by sounds of explosions.

Share Gifts Digitally

Send red envelopes electronically or surprise loved ones with festive treats like oranges, candies, or other meaningful items.

Celebrate with Local Friends

Invite friends or coworkers to join in the celebration by sharing a meal and introducing them to family and cultural customs. No dumpling circle is too big!

Honor Loved Ones Personally

For many, the New Year is a time to reflect and express gratitude for past ancestors. Although each family does it differently, many people create altars with family photos where they leave incense to welcome in their spirit and food to welcome them to the family feast.

Enjoy Entertainment

Watch TV specials, movies, or livestreams of celebrations and bell ringing around the world to feel connected to the worldwide communities celebrating Lunar New Year.

Explore Community Events

Seek out local or virtual celebrations to engage with others who are also celebrating, building new connections and shared experiences.

Focus on Self-Care

Use this time to set intentions for the year ahead, practice gratitude, and reflect on your personal growth. If you’re feeling homesick, allow yourself grace and comfort through activities like journaling, mindfulness, or meditation.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, homesick, or isolated, please remember that support is always available. Reaching out for help—whether to loved ones or mental health resources—is a powerful step toward caring for your own well-being.
