SAMHSA Notice of Funding

On December 20, SAMHSA announced further investment to prepare for the implementation of 988’s launch as the new dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The funding includes $105 million to states to build up staffing capacity, and $177 million to strengthen and expand the existing Lifeline network operations, infrastructure and capacity.

As the administrator of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline since its inception in 2005, Vibrant Emotional Health has long advocated for funding that serves to build capacity in states and centers directly, which the American Rescue Plan funding of $105 million provides. Vibrant appreciates SAMHSA and HHS for providing this initial funding, which demonstrates their continued commitment to supporting the Lifeline network and local centers.

SAMHSA and HHS also are investing $177 million to support Vibrant’s strategic efforts to strengthen the Lifeline network operations. The funding will be used to expand capacity within text and chat services under 988, increase backup center and Spanish language center capacity, as well as build sector partnerships that strengthen services for systemically underserved populations.

We look forward to working together with SAMHSA, states, and crisis centers to strengthen and expand the capacity and service of the Lifeline network under 988.
