Honoring Trans Day of Remembrance/ Resilience and Trans Awareness Week
By Johnell Lawrence, director of 988 equity and belonging
November serves as a time of great change and transformation. As we gaze upon the days of daylight savings time, crisp fall air, vibrant colors of nature preparing for a winter of rest, we hold space to remember.
The deep reflection of gratitude and the persistent efforts given in our daily lives. In addition, we celebrate.
A time of holiday bliss for some and cycle of grief for others. In the midst of it all, it is gravely important that we take a moment to honor Trans Day of Remembrance/Resilience and Trans Awareness Week.
Here’s a reminder to uplift the heroes within our own orbits. Many individuals and communities have had to excel, build, and thrive within a system that was built to enact constant suffering and chronic hopelessness.
Yet, they find joy. They create. They fight. They empower. They embrace. They love. They glow. They revolutionize. That’s the heroism and strength that is deserving of praise and amplification.
We champion the beauty within the multitudes of all identities, like the flowing hues of fall colors. Specifically, we want to celebrate the Trans, non-binary, queer, two-spirited and gender variant members of the Vibrant community. Your passion, intellect, care, fortitude, and grace serve as an active reminder to us all. You all are glittering stars of truth and joy magnified. We are grateful that you continue to entrust this organization and push us into the realm of thoughtful impact through accountability and constant visionary change.
Through the work driven by the Queens Affirming Youth and Family Alliance, Out@Vibrant, 988’s LGBTQIA+ Youth Advisory Group, 988’s subnetwork for LGBTQIA+ Youth, and a host of intersecting programs/projects/spaces, Vibrant continues to grow within the realm of social responsibility for LGBTQIA2S+ communities.
As we enter a season of celebration and family, this is also a time of empowerment, accountability, community care, and queer/trans joy.
We invite you to join the fight for a more just and hopeful tomorrow for all through each realm of our work.
